She grew up playing beach volleyball at the Santa Monica Pier with her parents, Butch and Barbara, both volleyball players. At age eight, she played her first volleyball tournament with her father. May-Treanor played other sports like soccer and tennis, as well as participated in dance. 4
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh have done just about everything a beach volleyball team could do: They won an Olympic gold medal in 2004 and are ranked No. May-Treanor has 102 championships in her career, a record among women, while Walsh has 99. 2
Entering these Games, May-Treanor and Walsh also had secured a record 18 straight tournament wins. The record-setting triumph at the Chicago Open on July 13 also gave May-Treanor 100 titles in her career. 8
May-Treanor attended Newport Harbor High School from 1991 to 1995, playing as a starter on the varsity volleyball team all four years. There, she helped her team win two state championships in indoor volleyball in 1992 and 1994. 7
Called “Six Feet of Sunshine,” Walsh played on the U.S. indoor team in 1999 and 2000 before switching to the beach. She played collegiate volleyball at Stanford, where she was named a first-team All-American in each of her four seasons. Walsh comes from an athletic family. Her father played minor league baseball for the Oakland A’s, and her mother was a two-time MVP in volleyball at Santa Clara. Her brother, Marte, played basketball at Cal Poly, and her sisters Kelli and KC both played collegiate volleyball at Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount, respectively. Walsh is also married to an athlete, as she tied the knot with fellow beach volleyball player Casey Jennings in December 2005. 9
Treanor attended Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California and was a standout baseball player. As a senior, he was a second-team All-America pick and was named to the all-tournament team at the Upper Deck high school baseball tournament. 5
