NEW YORK Paul Newman, who has recently appeared gaunt in photos and dropped plans to direct a play in his Connecticut hometown, is battling cancer, his longtime neighbor and business partner said Wednesday.
Oscar-winning actor and philanthropist Paul Newman died died on September 26, 2008, after a long battle with cancer.
The Oscar-winning actor, who has looked gaunt in recent public appearances, has cancer “in the lung area,” said A.E. Hotchner, who helped found the Newman’s Own salad dressing company.
“I know that it’s a form of cancer,” the AP quoted Hotchner as saying.
Paul Newman is battling cancer and is undergoing active treatments to combat the disease, a longtime friend said today.
Writer A.E. Hotchner, who partnered with Newman to start Newman’s Own salad dressing company in the 1980s, said the 83-year-old actor told him about the disease about 18 months ago.
Paul Newman’s friend and neighbor, A.E. Hotchner, is denying a reports that quote him as saying the 83-year-old actor has cancer.
He doesn’t say what kind of cancer, but said Newman is in active treatment.
Martha Stewart, in an entry dated June 6, posted a photo on her blog of herself with the actor, who looked thin, at a luncheon to benefit the Hole in the Wall Gang camps for critically ill children.
In August 2008, reports surfaced that Paul Newman had completed chemotherapy treatments for cancer.
He’s also a great humanitarian, crafty business man, oh, and I hear a pretty good actor, too.

Michael Brockman, Newman’s racing team partner, said Newman told him recently that he wants to get back into his race car for a test run and possibly another competition.
The Mail quoted an anonymous “friend” as saying the actor was getting his affairs in order, and that he had told his family he wished to die at home.
He finally lost his battle with lung cancer and died at his home in Westport, Connecticut yesterday.
Last month, officials at Connecticut’s Westport Country Playhouse cited unspecified health issues when they announced that Newman would not direct “Of Mice and Men” this fall.
