On January 4, Nancy Pelosi made history, breaking the marble ceiling to become the first woman to serve as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Concerns over ethics in Congress played a big part in the Democratic recapture of the House of Representatives and Pelosi’s ascension to the Speaker-ship after several members of Congress were investigated, indicted or convicted for legal wrongdoing in 2006.

A recent study by Congressional Quarterly found that “over the past half-century, Democrats in the House were never more unified” than they were under Pelosi in 2005, voting together a record 88 percent of the time.

The 8th District, which includes much of San Francisco, is considered one of the more liberal districts in the United States, and thus Pelosi has often been accused of extreme liberalism by her political opponents.

While raising her five children prior to her election to Congress, Pelosi served in a number of positions including Chair of the California Democratic Party.

Like most House Democrats, Pelosi opposed the resolution authorizing Bush to use military force against Iraq.

Twenty freshmen House Democrats have asked for legislation to establish an independent ethics commission within the legislative branch to investigate future ethical lapses by fellow members.

Khaled Al-Batch, spokesman for Islamic Jihad, which along with Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades has taken responsibility for every suicide bombing in Israel for the past two years, expressed hope Pelosi and the Democratic Party will pressure Bush to create dialogue with Syria and Middle East “resistance movements” and prompt an American withdrawal from Iraq.

She was elected as party chairwoman for Northern California on January 30, 1977.

She was a member of the Progressive Caucus until she became the party leader, when she adopted a policy of not belonging to any caucuses.
