Brett Favre Jets
It now appears that the New York Jets are the team willing to part with the best package to acquire Brett Favre in a trade, and that New York is the place the Packers would like to ship Favre, because it gets him out of the NFC. But it also appears that of all the teams that have an interest in Favre?s services, the Jets are the team Favre least wants to play for.
The 17-year quarterback spent his entire career in Green Bay as a Packer. Since his retirement, the Packers have resolved to move on and build around their new #1 quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. They stuck with this decision after Favre decided he wanted to return. That meant either he needed to stay retired or accept a trade to another team. Alas, the Packers and the future hall of famer can finally turn the page.
The two teams held preliminary trade discussions, covering potential draft-pick compensation and Favre’s contract status, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. During the conversation, the Packers suggested the Jets talk to Favre to gauge his interest in them, the person said.
Favre will enter into the starting quarterback position which means the Jets will likely release or trade one of their current quarterbacks, Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington. Speculation at this point indicates that Pennington will be the man out in this situation, giving the Jets a weathered veteran in the top of the depth chart and a youngster, Clemens, behind him to learn from one of the best in the history of the league.
Bringing in Favre for the 2008 season could have a positive effect on the Jets but it would almost certainly hinder Clemens’s development. That’s not reason enough not to do it, especially since Clemens has fallen well short of setting the world on fire, but it does mean that the Jets could find themselves without a quarterback in 12 months time. Every other move they’ve made has been to set the team up for the next two or three years and unless he guaranteed them that many years, Favre would interfere with that plan.
The Jets outbid the Bucs for Favre, whom many thought was leaning toward Tampa Bay because of his familiarity with coach Jon Gruden and his offensive system. But on Tuesday night, Tannenbaum and Mangini spoke to Favre by phone and evidently convinced him to accept a trade to the Jets.
According to ESPN, the Jets have been granted permission to talk Brett Favre about potentially joining the team. Yesterday the frontrunner for Favre was the Bucs but now it’s looking like the Jets might land the disgruntled QB. For the Packers, the Jets may be a good choice.
According to sources the New York Jets as well as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are interested in disgruntled semi-retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. The source told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that the Jets have permission to talk to Favre.
